A defining moment can be described in this manner: A point at which the essential nature or character of a person, group, or situation is clearly revealed or decided.
A Modern Example
I was listening to a recent conversation that featured Vice President JD Vance as the special guest and the topic of President Donald Trump came up concerning his demeanor and whether or not he either dwells on the close encounter with death when shot at in Butler, PA or if he has the ability to process it and move on.
VP Vance mentioned that occasionally someone might brush up against him and in a joking manner he would say, “OH, I’ve got this throbbing sensation in my ear.” The interviewer even asked, do you think it possible that him joking about the throbbing pain could be a subtle reminder that he knew God had intervened on his behalf on that occasion.
Here’s a question to consider: was it the indication of a light moment, a phantom pain, or was it a jolting reminder of God’s hand of protection and providential care for his life in that moment? That question becomes the lens for this reflection: defining moments may wound us, awaken us, and ultimately reveal the hand of God at work in our lives.
That kind of moment can stay with a person long after the danger has passed, not only as a memory but as a reminder of just how near life can come to the edge.
A Personal Memory
Years ago, we were privileged to know & pastor a man who had experienced a horrible accident while harvesting hay one evening.
Without going into the details, he was attempting to fix a jammed baler while it was still running. In his own words, “this was something he had done countless times before” but this time his clothing got caught by the machine and pulled him in.Unfortunately, he would lose one arm up to his shoulder and the other arm just above the elbow.
By the grace of God, his life was spared but in the years that followed he would experience phantom pain as if his mangled limbs were still attached.
This is an amazing phenomenon that’s difficult to explain or for that matter understand, yet the reality is that it really happens.
At any rate, it was a defining moment, similar in some ways to what the President experienced where both were literally a breath away from death.
As I write, I can’t help but wonder how many have had a defining moment that has deeply impacted their life.
In that sense, the lingering reminders of pain and preservation point us toward another man whose defining moment left him with a visible mark and a new understanding of God’s blessing.
Jacob’s Defining Moment
Scripture tells us of a man who definitely experienced one of those defining moments.The account is found in Genesis 32:24-28
"So, Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” [NIV]
What We Can Learn
Jacob’s story helps us look back at every defining moment through a deeper spiritual lens. Whether the moment comes through danger, loss, pain, or wrestling with God, it can become a place where God reshapes how we see ourselves, our struggles, and His blessing.
First, Jacob’s defining moment was a moment of identity transformation. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, meaning “he struggles with God.” Our identities can often become wrapped up in the things we achieve or the circumstances we find ourselves in. But in Christ, our true identity emerges, reminding us that we are children of God. May we embrace our identity in Christ, knowing it is unshakeable.
Second, Jacob’s defining moment was a life-changing moment. When we wrestle with God, we may not realize the transformational power at work. Just as Jacob was transformed from Jacob to Israel, we too are invited into a journey of transformation in Christ. This metamorphosis helps us shed old habits, thinking, and ties that do not serve us. Our relationship with God empowers us to grow, bringing forth who we are intended to be in Him.
Third, Jacob’s defining moment teaches us to see struggle as a pathway to blessing. Instead of fighting against the struggle in our defining moment, we can embrace it, knowing that God can use even painful seasons to lead us toward blessings beyond our imagination.
Defining moments often leave marks we would not have chosen, yet they can also become sacred reminders that God was present, preserving, shaping, and blessing us through the struggle. Whether we remember an unexpected brush with death, a painful loss, or a long night of wrestling with God, those moments can become places of transformation. May we learn, like Jacob, not to run from them, but to recognize them as places where God meets us, changes us, and sends us forward with a deeper awareness of His grace.
